What matters nowUpdated 18 h ago

  • Earnings: Q3 2026 results are expected around October 29 (date listed as estimated). Cantor Fitzgerald cut its price target to $310 from $320 on October 12 while keeping Overweight, expecting healthy cloud acceleration and strong EBIT margins.
  • M&A: the Wall Street Journal reported on October 11 that Amazon is in talks to buy AI startup Decart for about $7 billion; Decart was valued at nearly $4 billion in May. The talks are unconfirmed.
  • Antitrust: Judge John Chun denied Amazon's request to delay the FTC monopolization trial to June 2027, so the trial stays set for March 29, 2027.
  • Operations: Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6-7 in 22 countries across 35+ categories. Amazon pledged more than $1 billion over five years to communities that host its US data centers. An NTSB preliminary report on the September 6 Miami crash of a 767 freighter flown for Amazon found the jet touched down about 3,750 feet past the threshold.
  • Next: AWS re:Invent from November 30 to December 4 in Las Vegas, about 1 GW of Trainium capacity for Anthropic targeted online by year end, Amazon Leo initial service later in 2026, and the FTC trial on March 29, 2027. Watch AWS growth, capex and Trainium commentary on the Q3 call.

Amazon.com runs the largest online retail marketplace in the US and many other countries, plus logistics, advertising, subscriptions and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest cloud infrastructure business. In fiscal 2025 AWS was about 18% of net sales but about 57% of operating income, so cloud margins and AI capacity spending drive the stock. The company is now spending heavily on AI data centers, custom chips and satellite broadband.↗ source

How it makes money

Amazon earns retail revenue from first-party sales and third-party seller fees, fulfillment and shipping services, advertising, and Prime memberships. AWS sells pay-as-you-go cloud computing, storage, databases and AI services, and is the main profit engine. Growth now depends on how fast AWS can add AI capacity and on whether the retail business keeps its margins.
