What matters nowUpdated 18 h ago

  • The S&P 500 closed at a record 7,818.93 on October 6, up 0.6%, on profit-growth expectations and easing bond yields. It then slipped on October 7 as global yields rose, dropped 0.5% to 7,765.36 on October 8 in an oil-driven whipsaw, rose 0.6% to 7,811.54 on October 9 and finished barely lower at 7,807.24 on October 12, with bond trading closed.
  • Rates are the main risk. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.34% on October 1, its highest since 2002, in a global bond selloff tied to inflation and oil; stocks fell on September 28 when it reached roughly two-decade highs. The 10-year closed at 5.24% on October 9.
  • Fed: it raised the target range 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00% on September 16 in a 12-0 vote. Minutes released October 7 showed most officials see another hike by year end, and Governor Barr said further adjustments are likely needed in his base case. Slower hiring on October 2 had eased inflation worries for a day.
  • Next: monthly SPX options expiration on October 16, the advance Q3 GDP estimate and September PCE on October 29, the October jobs report on November 6, October CPI on November 10 and PPI on November 13, then quarterly options expiry and the S&P 500 rebalance on December 18. Most large-cap Q3 earnings land between now and early November.
