What matters nowUpdated 19 h ago

  • Hormuz is the driver. Kpler data showed crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz down 27% from the wartime high to at least 10.1 million barrels per day in the week before October 9, with only seven commodity carriers transiting on the Tuesday, the fewest since late July. Reuters counted at least 12 attacks on oil, LNG and LPG tankers around the strait from September 28 to October 5, the highest weekly count of the war.
  • Diplomacy: on October 8 Trump said the US would not attack Iran before the November 3 midterms and that talks were productive; oil fell early on October 9 as supply worries eased.
  • Supply risk: Hurricane Isaias had shut in about 62.9% of current Gulf of Mexico oil output and 57.4% of gas output by October 8, with 121 production platforms evacuated.
  • OPEC+ and pricing: the seven participating countries kept required November output flat at 31.01 million bpd, with Saudi Arabia at 10.478 million. Saudi Aramco cut its November Arab Light price to Asia to $5 below the Oman/Dubai average, the widest Asian discount since June 2020.
  • Next: the OPEC+ seven-country meeting on November 1 (confirmed) sets December output; the pause in monthly increases has been extended twice. The November 3 US midterms and the November 10 EIA outlook follow. Watch Hormuz transit counts, tanker incident reports and Gulf of Mexico restarts after Isaias.
